As a manufacturer of theodolites, boresights, collimators, clinometers, navigation tools and much more, we have the experience necessary to repair just about any optical instrument.
Because we are a manufacturer of optical tools and instruments, if your repair requires a new part, we can simply make that part in-house, we don’t have to wait for parts to come in from some far-away warehouse. Our repairs include the complete disassembly of your instrument as well as complete lubrication and cleaning of each part.
Theodolites Are A Vital Tool
While our primary focus might be on selling, renting and repairing digital theodolites and other types of instruments, we also love to dive into a bit of history about our products. For instance, did you know that theodolites have been essential cartography and geography tools for centuries? In the mid-1800s, giant theodolites were built to estimate the height of Mount Everest and while these early theodolites are not as accurate as tools we have today, the readings were surprisingly accurate.
The massive Ramsden Theodolite, also known as the Great Theodolite, took three years to build and weighed more than 200 pounds. This theodolite was transported through Great Britain to help surveyors and cartographers complete the Ordnance Survey of Great Britain in the late 18th century.
But theodolites aren’t just used on planet Earth to help map out landforms. A total station, which is a theodolite combined with electronic distance measurement, or EDM, was used to help map the surface of Mars.
Of course, these total stations would be working remotely and using cameras, rather than the human eye. After all, Elon Musk and Matt Damon haven’t yet made it to Mars to act as the Lewis & Clark of the Martian world, but when they do, we certainly aren’t opposed to designing instruments for use on the first SpaceX launch to Mars.
