The original Jacob’s staff was developed in the 1300’s and was used in making nautical and astronomical measurements. The cross-staff, as some called it, was a single pole device was marked in degrees, and the altitude of the stars could be determined by using a sliding wooden panel on the rod. Our Jacob’s engineering staff was designed to support the surveyor compasses and forestry compasses we manufacture. The Jacob’s staff for geology purposes is mainly used to measure stratigraphic thicknesses of the soil and bedding of a site. The surveyor poles we sell are not for those purposes.
