At Warren Knight, we’ve been designing and manufacturing precision instruments for more than century, but many people don’t know that one of our areas of specialization includes calibration services, including NIST traceable calibration.

What Is NIST Traceable Calibration?

NIST is the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and this government agency, which is part of the United States Department of Commerce, sets standards for measurement as well as for proper calibration practices. When a company provides NIST traceable calibration, this means that our technicians calibrate based upon NIST measurement standards.

At Warren Knight, we offer NIST traceable calibration and repair to MIL-STD-45662A. MIL-STD-45662A refers to standards required by the U.S. government. We can provide you with a 24-hour calibration turnaround in many cases if needed. We also provide NIST traceable repairs for just about any optical or mechanical alignment instrument as well as for leveling and angle measuring equipment.

We offer three instrument certification classes, depending on your needs and budget. We can provide you with basic certification without readings, with readings provided after calibration is performed, or our highest certification level, with readings provided before and after calibration.

When we provide NIST traceable calibration, it means we are using specific national standards of measurement through what the NIST states is defined as “the property of a measurement result whereby the result can be related to a reference through a documented unbroken chain of calibrations, each contributing to the measurement uncertainty.”

When it comes to measurement uncertainty, the NIST characterizes measurement in general as an “experimental process that produces a value that can reasonably be attributed to a quantitative property of a phenomenon, body, or substance.” However, it is important to keep that though there is a certain level of uncertainty, it doesn’t mean that the calibration services won’t provide you with the results you want. This is simply an acknowledgment that, to the best of our abilities using the highest measurement standards possible, an instrument will be calibrated.

In general, what NIST traceable calibration really signifies is our commitment to quality and excellence. Our team of trained technicians and engineers have the experience and qualifications necessary to provide you with the highest quality calibration services.  With Warren Knight, you have the peace of mind that comes with knowing our calibration team is equal to any challenge, and, frankly, we’ve been around since 1908, which is almost as long as the NIST has existed, so we truly offer a level of experience you can count on.

The NIST was founded in 1901, and while it provides us with the standards for NIST traceable calibration, they provide many other crucial services that relate to measurement. For instance, if you were to get an x-ray, the NIST has established standards that protect patients from high levels of radiation exposure. The NIST also has helped with the development of encryption standards, which is crucial when one considers that billions of dollars in transactions occur online every day.

The NIST also helped develop standards for smoke detectors, as well as the proper placement of smoke detectors in homes. Closed captioning for television was also co-invented by scientists at NIST. The NIST also sets crucial timekeeping devices such as computer clocks about 2.6 billion times each day. These are just a few examples of how NIST impacts the lives of Americans.

Furthermore, scientists from the NIST have earned several Nobel Prizes. Dave Wineland won a Nobel Prize in Physics in 2012. Dan Schectman won a Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2011. Jan Hall won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2005. Eric Cornell won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2001, and Bill Phillips won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1997.

Repair Services

While calibration services are needed from time to time, we know that many precision instruments also will need repairs and we can provide you with repairs for just about any type of optical tool or optical instrument. Our repairs include a complete disassembly of the instrument, complete lubrication and cleaning of all of the parts. Our repairs, just as with our calibration services, are NIST traceable and all work is guaranteed.

Rental Services

We offer weekly and monthly rental rates for a wide variety of equipment. Whether you just need a piece of equipment for a few days while an instrument is being repaired or you need something for a special project, we can rent the following instruments:

  • Transits
  • Transit Levels
  • Automatic Levels
  • Precision Levels (and Precision Tilt Levels)
  • Clinometers/Inclinometers
  • Total Stations
  • Field Computers/Data Collectors
  • Theodolites
  • Tripods, Rods & Stands

If you don’t see precisely what you need, let us know as this list doesn’t include all of the specialty equipment that we can rent. Additionally, if you find that you like the instrument you are renting, we do offer a rental-purchase plan.

Of course, we also design and manufacture a wide variety of equipment, including inclinometers, boresights, leveling equipment, theodolites, navigation equipment, alidades, a forestry compass, a surveyor compass and many other surveying instruments just to name a few.
